The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a fun Personality Psychology assessment that categorizes personality based on 4 different dichotomies. This test was originally created to help find a suitable career based on an individual's personality type.
Attitudes: Extraversion or Introversion (E/I).
Function 1: Sensing or Intuition (S/N). Perceiving Functions.
Function 2: Thinking or Feeling (T/F). Judging Functions.
Lifestyle: Judging or Perception (J/P).
Here is a simple guide and definitions to make some meaning out of all these terms:
Extravert: Are said to be action oriented, prefer more frequent interaction with others, and get their energy spending time with others.
Introvert: Thought oriented, prefer more substantial interaction, and derive their energy from spending time alone.
Sensing or Intuition: Refers to how an individual interprets and understands new information. A Sensing individual is more likely to trust information that is tangible and can be understood by the 5 senses. An Intuitive individual tends to trust information that is abstract or theoretical.
Thinking or Feeling: Refers to how an individual makes decisions. Those who score higher in Thinking tend to make decisions "by what seems reasonable, logical, causal, consistent and matching a given set of rules." Those who prefer Feeling tend to make decisions based on "by associating or empathizing with the situation, looking at it 'from the inside' and weighing the situation to achieve, on balance, the greatest harmony, consensus and fit, considering the needs of the people involved." (both definitions from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Briggs_Type_Indicator).
Judging or Perception: Refers to how an individual approaches the outside world. Either using Perceiving Functions (Sensing or Intuition) or Judging Functions (Thinking or Feeling) more often than the other.
After taking the MBTI the results are given in the form of a 4 letter string of letters for example: ISTJ, ENTJ, ENFP, etc. This 4 letter sting is known as your Type. There are lists of Types for historical figures and celebrities which can be found here. http://www.celebritytypes.com/philosophers/index.php
